What Is Skinmaxxing? Our Take on the Latest Skincare Trend
If you follow skincare on social media, you’ve probably heard the term skinmaxxing. Like most beauty trends, the name makes it sound more complicated than it really is. Skinmaxxing is simply the idea of getting your skin to look and feel its best.
At Gentle Touch MediSpa in Orlando, we’re always a little cautious about the latest TikTok trend, but this is one we can get behind—with one important distinction. Better skin doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from doing what your skin actually needs. That means protecting it every day, using the right skincare and choosing professional treatments based on your skin—not based on what’s trending in your feed.
So, What Exactly Is Skinmaxxing?
Think of skinmaxxing as taking a more intentional approach to your skin. Instead of focusing on one wrinkle, one brown spot or the latest “must-have” treatment, you’re looking at overall skin quality: tone, texture, clarity, firmness and how healthy your skin looks and feels. For one person, that might mean finally getting serious about sunscreen and medical-grade skincare. For someone else, it could mean adding microneedling to improve texture and support collagen. And for skin with years of Florida sun exposure, lasers or resurfacing may make the biggest difference. There isn’t one skinmaxxing routine because there isn’t one type of skin.
It Starts With What You Do Every Day
We love a great treatment, but what you do the other 364 days of the year matters. And here in Orlando, sunscreen is non-negotiable. Daily UV exposure contributes to many of the things clients eventually come to us wanting to improve, including brown spots, uneven tone, fine lines and other visible signs of sun damage. A good home routine doesn’t need ten steps, either. The right cleanser, antioxidants or corrective products, moisturizer and daily broad-spectrum SPF can accomplish much more than a bathroom counter filled with products that weren’t chosen for your skin. As Orlando’s only SkinCeuticals Flagship, we spend a lot of time helping clients figure out what their skin actually needs—and, just as importantly, what it doesn’t.
When Skincare Isn’t Enough
There are things great skincare can do, and there are things it simply can’t. That’s where professional treatments come in. The key is choosing a treatment based on the concern you’re trying to improve instead of starting with the treatment itself. If texture and collagen are the issue, we may talk about microneedling. If you’re bothered by redness, pigmentation or sun damage, a laser or light-based treatment may make more sense. If your skin needs more significant resurfacing, that’s a different conversation. We start with the goal and then choose the treatment—not the other way around.
Building Collagen + Improving Texture
Microneedling has become one of the most talked-about skin treatments, and there’s a reason we like it. Rather than changing the way you look, microneedling works with your skin’s natural repair process to stimulate collagen and improve overall skin quality. We often consider microneedling for clients concerned with uneven texture, enlarged-looking pores, fine lines and acne scarring. It’s also a good example of what we like about the skinmaxxing idea: the goal isn’t to look “done.” It’s simply to help your skin look better.
Correcting Tone, Pigment + Sun Damage
Living in Florida has plenty of advantages. Our year-round sun isn’t necessarily one of them when it comes to our skin. Brown spots, redness, uneven pigmentation and accumulated sun damage are some of the most common concerns we see. Depending on your skin, treatments such as IPL or Prisma may be used to target specific concerns and create a clearer, more even-looking complexion. This is also why we don’t believe there is a single “best laser.” Different technologies do different things, and the right choice depends on what we’re treating, your skin type, your goals and how much downtime you’re comfortable with.
When Resurfacing Makes Sense
Sometimes skin needs more than a little refining. For clients concerned with more noticeable texture, fine lines or sun damage, resurfacing treatments such as Tetra CO2 or CoolPeel may become part of the conversation. These treatments can be customized depending on the result we’re trying to achieve and the amount of downtime that works for you. More aggressive isn’t automatically better. The goal is to use the right treatment at the right level for your skin and the improvement we’re trying to achieve.
And Don’t Forget the Basics
Not every skin goal requires a laser. Facials, chemical peels and other professional skin treatments can play an important role in keeping skin looking fresh and maintaining the results of more corrective treatments. Your plan may also change throughout the year. What makes sense for your skin in August in Orlando may not be what we recommend in January. That’s another reason we prefer a thoughtful plan over simply collecting treatments.
Where Do Botox + Filler Fit In?
This is where we’d separate skinmaxxing from aesthetic treatments that address other parts of facial aging. Botox works on muscle movement. Filler can restore volume or enhance facial contours. Facial balancing looks at proportion and structure. Those treatments can complement beautiful skin, but they don’t replace taking care of the skin itself. For some clients, the best overall result may eventually include both. For others, improving skin quality is exactly where they want to focus. You don’t need everything—you need the right things for you.
Does Skinmaxxing Change as You Get Older?
Absolutely—and it should. In your 20s, the smartest plan may be mostly about prevention: sunscreen, good skincare and keeping your skin healthy. In your 30s, you may start thinking more about collagen, early pigmentation or changes in texture. By your 40s, 50s and beyond, sun damage, collagen loss, texture and resurfacing may become bigger priorities. But we don’t believe in treatment checklists based on age. We’ve met clients in their 20s who need help with pigmentation and clients in their 60s with beautiful skin who simply want to maintain it. We treat the skin in front of us, not the number on your birthday cake.
Our Take on Skinmaxxing
Beauty trends come and go, but hopefully this part of skinmaxxing sticks around: taking better care of your skin is worth it. Where we part ways with social media is the idea that maximizing your skin means constantly adding something new. At Gentle Touch, we’d rather help you understand your skin, decide what you’d genuinely like to improve and put together a plan that makes sense. Sometimes that means skincare. Sometimes it’s microneedling, a laser or resurfacing. Sometimes it’s a combination. And sometimes we’ll tell you that you don’t need anything more right now. The goal isn’t more treatment. It’s better skin.
